Retail Margin on Nicotine Pouches: How Shops Price Per Can

How shops calculate margin on nicotine pouches: margin vs markup, cost per can from the roll price, what lowers your margin and five ways to earn more per can.

Retail margin on nicotine pouches

Nicotine pouches are a small product with a big effect on a shop's profit. A can takes almost no shelf space, customers buy it again and again, and the margin per can is easy to control if you know your numbers. This guide shows how shops calculate the margin on nicotine pouches, how to set a retail price per can, and which products help you earn more per order. All products mentioned are available as best-selling nicotine pouches wholesale from Sweden.

Margin and markup: know the difference

Many shop owners mix up margin and markup. Both are useful, but they are not the same number.

  • Markup is profit as a share of your purchase price. Buy at 3.00 and sell at 4.50: profit 1.50, markup 50%.
  • Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Same example: 1.50 ÷ 4.50 = 33% margin.

Always compare prices without VAT. Your purchase price is normally quoted excluding VAT, so take VAT out of your shelf price before you calculate.

How to calculate your price per can

Wholesale nicotine pouches are sold by the roll. One roll is 10 cans, so the calculation is simple:

  1. Cost per can = roll price ÷ 10.
  2. Add freight = total freight ÷ number of cans in the order.
  3. Add local costs such as excise duty or tax stamps, if your country has them.
  4. Set the shelf price so the price excluding VAT gives you the margin you want.

Example (illustrative figures only, not our prices): a roll costs 30.00, so one can costs 3.00. Freight adds 0.20 per can, giving a landed cost of 3.20. If you sell the can for 5.00 excluding VAT, you make 1.80 per can, a margin of 36%. Sell 100 cans a week and that is 180 profit per week from one small shelf.

What lowers your margin

  • Freight on small orders. Freight cost per can falls as the order grows. One larger order every few weeks is usually cheaper than many small ones.
  • Slow flavours. Cans that sit on the shelf tie up cash and get close to their best-before date. Drop flavours that do not sell.
  • Out-of-stock best sellers. A missing favourite is a lost sale, and the customer may buy everything at another shop.
  • Local taxes. Some countries charge excise duty on nicotine pouches. Include it in your cost per can before you set the price.

Products that help your margin

The fastest sellers give the best return because the money comes back quickly. These products are all in our best sellers collection:

Why it helps Products
Brand customers ask for by name, steady reorders ZYN Cool Mint Slim, ZYN Spearmint Slim, ZYN Cool Mint Ice
Core mints that sell all year VELO Crispy Peppermint, VELO Freezing Peppermint, VELO Crispy Peppermint Mini
Fruit flavours that bring new customers VELO Tropical Mango, XQS Twin Apple, LOOP Blueberry Ice
Alternative brands that customers compare less on price GREATEST Arctic, GREATEST Cold Dry Intense, XQS Arctic Freeze

A good mix is mostly fast-selling big brands, plus a few alternative brands where you can set your own price because customers cannot compare them easily.

Five ways to earn more per can

  1. Order fewer, larger orders. Our minimum is 24 rolls (240 cans), but larger orders lower your freight per can. From about 25 cartons, a half pallet by Dachser is often the cheapest option.
  2. Price the big brands close to the market. Customers know what ZYN and VELO cost. Keep them competitive to bring people in.
  3. Earn more on the alternatives. Brands such as XQS, LOOP and LUNDGRENS give you more room on price.
  4. Offer multi-buy deals. A small discount on 5 or 10 cans moves more stock and keeps customers coming back to you.
  5. Track sell-through every month. Reorder what sells, drop what does not, and keep your money in fast-moving stock.
